About

The CEO's Statement - Yarona Richardson

Welcome to Beit Maslan – your place for healing, support, and social transformation.

For over three decades, Maslan has stood as a beacon of hope in the Negev, extending its hand to those who have faced the darkness of sexual assault and domestic violence. Our journey is marked by an unwavering commitment to each individual, a promise to provide the support, services, and justice that everyone deserves, and a dedication to reshaping the narrative surrounding these social injustices.

Together, we envision a world characterized by harmony, awareness, female leadership, partnership, and hope. We strive for a society built on principles of dialogue, respect, active listening, diversity, shared desires, mutual agreement, reciprocity, and justice.

Maslan’s theory of change is built on a dual approach. Firstly, we offer comprehensive support to victims, viewing their journey holistically, fostering independence, prosperity, and a community of healing, leadership, and social change. Concurrently, we work to dismantle the social structures that enable these acts, promoting education, prevention, and information to reduce the incidence of sexual and domestic violence.

As the CEO of Maslan, I lead a profound and compassionate journey. We acknowledge and celebrate the boundless potential for change, fueled by the remarkable strength that women find in supporting one another. The incredible efforts of our 300 volunteers in a hotline that operates 24/7 in 8 languages, bear witness to the power of community—a collective of individuals united for a common goal, offering a lifeline to those in need.

I feel privileged to be part of the Maslan community, grateful for our professional and inspiring team, and appreciative of every volunteer, partner, and supporter. Your dedication reverberates through the heart of Maslan, transforming lives, and breaking the silence surrounding violence.

However, as we navigate the complexity of this task, the demand for our services in a center deeply rooted in the south continues to rise, especially in the aftermath of the events on 7/10. The need for resources becomes increasingly urgent. I invite potential partners, allies, and supporters to join us in this mission.

Together, we can ignite a spark of hope in the hearts of women and society, cultivate a world free from the threat of violence and assault, and construct bridges of hope that span generations, lighting the way toward a more inclusive and equal tomorrow.

Yours and yours,

Yarona Ben Shalom Richardson

The history

The history

Maslan was established in 1988 by a group of activist women with a feminist ideology, headed by social worker Ofira Levi. That same year, they opened Maslan’s first volunteer course at the end of which the Emergency Support Line for abused women was launched. The Support Line operated from a small office in the old city of Beer Sheva, and was only active during the day. Two years later, the volunteers started conducting workshops for the community regarding domestic violence and surrounding issues.

In 1993, the board decided to open a shelter for battered women, and to develop the Legal Aid project. In 1999 the Pratt Foundation helped Maslan purchase a permanent home for its activity, at Ha’rav Herzog 30, Beer Sheva. During that year the organization underwent significant changes, including the board’s decision to appoint Liza Nikolaichuk, a volunteer and a board member, to be Maslan’s CEO. In addition, they decided to hire a professional staff with broader knowledge and wider range of tools to assist abused women.

In 2005 the board decided to separate the shelter from Maslan, and to extend work around sexual violence. In 2006 Maslan’s outpatient treatment unit was established, due to the lack of therapeutic response in the Negev.

In 2008 three main fields of activity were redefined: assistance and legal aid for victims, therapeutic care, and educational workshops to the general public.

In 2014 Maslan changed its name from “women’s crisis center, Negev” to “The Negev’s Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Support Center”.
